Using PBS in Home School and Public School

Is your child a visual or auditory learner? Looking for a way to spark up the interest in some subjects? Whether you are using public school education or home schooling Public Broadcasting system is a truly awesome resource. PBS offers programs in many different subjects. I watched a great one about Steven Jobs and how he expanded our horizons, visited the Nile, and learned how to cook a really scrumptious brownie all in one day.I know you have a computer, you are reading this, so you are able to tap into this way of exciting your student! The History Detective series explores the past giving a personal connection that is lacking in many books. NOVA brings exciting new discoveries, the commentator is easy to listen to and has a nice sense of humor. The Create channel covers everything from painting to cooking and sewing projects.

Giving your student a view  of different cultures that they might want to one day explore widens their understanding of what our world offers. The travel monologues give them an excellent preview of what these countries have in the way of climate, tourist  accommodations, food choices, history, and attractions. Being exposed to different countries and cultures helps to foster better understanding of how our world works.

An expanded understanding of what is occurring in our world can be found by listening to the different programs offered on the World channel. The news broadcasts give a different slant to a variety of subjects that our own news agencies either do not cover or are offered in a vary biased format.  Having open conversations with your child about these programs can help them to form reasonable and thought provoking ideas.

My husband and youngest son have enjoyed the programs on furniture building and the one that features using tools that our forefathers used. This has helped foster some vary interesting conversations and projects!

I have found that PBS expands horizons and encourages imagination. This is a totally free resource and available for anyone who has access to a computer and the Internet. So log on, tune in and enjoy!
