Homeschool vs Public School Introduction

Making the Best Choices for Them!A recent report stated “SAT reading scores for the high school class of 2011 were the lowest on record, and combined reading and math scores fell to their lowest point since 1995.” This brings into focus the need to look more closely at how our public schools are educating our children. The report went on to say “The reading scores, which stand at 497, are noticeably lower than just six years ago, when they stood at 508. And it’s just the second time in the last 20 years that reading scores have dropped so precipitously in a single year.”

The US Department of Education has recently released an enormous document that has further appalling statistics. When you take a few hours and wade through the documentation you will find that we are no longer number 1 in any of the educational goals. We do not even rate number 2 in Math, Reading, or Science! We have fallen to 6th place and lower in some of the necessary fields. This leaves our children in a very sad shape for furthering their future!  There is also a rising increase in students having to take remedial classes when they enter college because they did not get all of the information that they needed.

With the economic environment our public schools are existing in these statistics are likely to get worse. Funding is disappearing as our federal, state, and local economies continue to struggle under a failing economy.

As a parent, we need to look at the alternatives that we can take to turn these statistics around and make sure that our children are ready to excel when they reach adulthood!

Chris, please consider submitting something about homeschooling to the Carnival of Homeschooling. If you are interested, here are the instructions.

If this week is bad for you, you are always welcome to submit to future carnivals.

If a “blog carnival” is a new term, this might help.

Here is the archive of previous carnivals

Participating in a blog carnvial is a good way to get more exposure for your blog.

This is great information! I think that the hard part about public school now is that you have to try and cater to so many different learning styles, which is why I like homeschooling. The ability to cater to my children’s needs is so important to me! Found you through the Hip Homeschool Blog Hop. Would love to have you visit me over at my blog!

I jokingly say that I have 997 reasons to homeschool. I probably have more than that, but I find that one reason I homeschool is because I need to offer my child more attention than she would get in public school. I understand budget considerations, overcrowding, not leaving anyone behind, etc. I don’t blame the public school sysem for failing my child, but I also will not allow her to fall through the cracks when I am capable of saving her. With the internet, and good, solid, free and low cost curricula available there (like Vocabulary and Spelling City) I just don’t know why it we don’t have better educated students. Thanks for the stats, knowledge is power!
