Economic Impact On Public and Home Schooling

Is Economics Important to Me?

Is Economics Important to Me?

Our economy is changing. This does not come as a surprise to anyone. Many people are having problems finding or keeping jobs.We are becoming a more mobile society through choice or economic impact reasons. As parents we do what we must to put food on the table and a roof over our families head, so when it becomes necessary to change locations in order to satisfy those goals children sometimes lose in the bargain. It is hard on a child to be transferred from one type of schooling to another. School tends to build on what was learned previously and not all systems build in the same way. This causes your child to lose necessary information to progress through the system. As their grades fall they begin to feel helpless and lose interest in learning because they feel it is futile.

One of the biggest reasons I hear for public school is that your child needs to be socialized. When a change in location means a change in schools then the child is thrust into being the outsider or “new Kid” and has to start making connections all over again. They are isolated from knowing who will make a good friend and who might be a bad choice.  When this happens several times in their young years it makes it extremely hard for them to create meaningful friendships. Friendships become shallow. As parents we tend to keep in touch with those who have a deep connection with us, however, we tend to socialize less and less with distant relationships as time moves us forward. Even our family ties become more distant and we begin to feel isolated. Parents are busy establishing a new place in society and quite often miss the signs of helplessness coming from their children.

When you home school your children they can progress through the learning process in an orderly fashion even if you change locations. Your children thrive when they know that something is stable in their lives. They learn to trust that even though some things change other things will always be the same. They begin to accept change in their lives as part of the growing process. They make a strong connection with you as a parent who is interested in their learning and want them to succeed.

Public schools are finding it challenging to keep good teachers and provide resources for the students because of the declining economy. They are being forced into cutting corners in order to keep the doors open. Classes are filled with more children and days are being cut out of the schedule.

The statistical scores for home school children and public school children show the difference in the learning progress that these students are achieving. Public school students SAT scores have fallen dramatically in the last few years. Home school children out score them in all fields of education. When coupled with the emotional impacts students are encountering in the public schools with gang violence, bullying and predatory teachers it makes home school stand out as an excellent choice for your child.

We are a recently retired military family who have moved a lot in the past 15 years. My oldest, had he gone away to school, would now be in his 5th school and he is only 13. Instead we have used a Catholic curriculum that built steadily each year, especially in the areas of grammar and writing. While his siblings are still being homeschooled, our oldest is in a “fancy” Catholic school now, where he is making straight A’s. His teachers tell me how well behaved he is in class and how he is a great contributor during discussions. Just yesterday he was telling me how he was teaching his whole class how to make cool graphics in PowerPoint, learned last summer when he made a homemade I Spy game for his little brother’s birthday present.
